Sweet Daisy Earflap Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

The Sweet Daisy Earflap Hat is a cozy, cottagecore-inspired accessory that's as sweet as it is practical. Worked in warm cream worsted weight yarn with two little teardrop earflaps, braided ties, and a single daisy appliqué at the center front, it's the perfect hat for chilly walks, school mornings, or gifting to a little one you love. The plain single crochet texture keeps the fabric soft and dense, while the daisy adds just the right touch of charm. If you can single crochet and decrease, you can make this hat — and you'll love how quickly it comes together.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (4) acrylic or wool blend — 200 yds cream (Color A), 10 yds yellow (Color B), 10 yds white (Color C)
  • Hook: 5.5 mm (I-9) crochet hook
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, scissors, measuring tape
  • Finished size: Child/Teen — 20" circumference, 8" height including earflaps

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • sc — single crochet
  • dc — double crochet
  • sc2tog — single crochet two stitches together (a decrease)
  • MR — magic ring (adjustable loop)
  • sts — stitches

Gauge

12 sc and 15 rows = 4" x 4". Work a small swatch in single crochet and measure it; if you have more stitches than 12 in 4", go up a hook size, and if you have fewer, go down a size.

Tips Before You Start

  • When you join the starting chain into a ring, double-check it isn't twisted before working Round 1 — a twist here can't be fixed later.
  • Keep your joined rounds snug: work the slip stitch join loosely enough to find, but not so loose that it creates a visible seam ridge.
  • Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round so you always know where to join.
  • Before adding the second earflap, count about 20 stitches between the two flaps so they sit evenly on opposite sides.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Hat (Color A)

Set-up: Ch 60, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st to first sc (60 sts).

Rnds 2–24: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc (60 sts).

Fasten off.

Earflaps (make 2, Color A)

With A, join yarn to any st on the last round of the hat, ch 1.

Row 1: Sc in same st, sc in next 9 sts (10 sts). Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog (8 sts). Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across (8 sts). Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog (6 sts). Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across (6 sts). Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog (4 sts). Turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each st across (4 sts). Turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc2tog twice (2 sts). Turn.

Row 9: Ch 1, sc2tog (1 st).

Fasten off. Repeat for the second earflap, spacing the two evenly on opposite sides of the hat (about 20 sts apart).

Braided Ties (make 2)

Cut 6 strands of A, each 30" long. Fold the bundle in half, pull the loop through the bottom point of an earflap, then pull the loose ends through the loop to secure. Braid to your desired length, knot the end, and trim the ends evenly. Repeat for the second earflap.

Daisy Appliqué

Center (Color B): With B, work 5 sc into a magic ring, join with sl st to first sc (5 sts). Fasten off.

Petals (Color C): With C, join to any sc. [Ch 2, dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in same st] to make one petal. Sl st in next sc. Repeat the petal in each sc around (5 petals total). Fasten off.

Sew the daisy to the center front of the hat.

Edging (optional)

With A, sc evenly around the bottom edge of the hat and around each earflap. Fasten off.

Assembly and Finishing

Weave in all ends on the wrong side of the hat, working each tail through several stitches so it stays put. Sew the daisy securely to the center front with a few small stitches through the yellow center. If you added the optional edging, smooth it flat with your fingers. Block lightly by misting the hat with water and shaping it over a bowl or hat form to the finished measurements; let it dry completely before wearing.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the cream for a soft sage, dusty rose, or oatmeal to change the cottagecore mood without altering the pattern.
  • Make the daisy in contrasting colors — a white center with pale pink petals looks lovely on a cream hat.
  • For a warmer hat, add a second strand of yarn held together with Color A, or work the edging in a contrasting color for a simple pop of detail.
