Rosy Granny Square Dress – Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

The Rosy Granny Square Dress is a pastel dream made for anyone who loves a little retro charm with a modern, flattering fit. It pairs a smooth cherry red bodice and short sleeves with a playful granny square skirt worked in a checkerboard of cherry red and pink. The result is a light, drapey summer dress that feels soft against the skin and looks lovely in photos. If you can crochet a basic granny square and a double crochet, you can make this dress — the squares do most of the work for you!

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Fine (2) weight yarn, such as sport weight cotton or a cotton blend. Cherry red (A): 600 yards. Pink (B): 600 yards.
  • Hook: 3.25 mm (D/3) crochet hook, or the size needed to match gauge.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers, scissors, and a tape measure.
  • Finished size: Fits size S/M (chest 30–34", waist 26–28", hip 36–38"). Dress length from shoulder: 36". Skirt circumference: 40".

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sl st – slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • sc – single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • dc – double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops.
  • dc2tog – double crochet two together: a decrease worked over two stitches, turning them into one.
  • st(s) – stitch(es).
  • rnd – round: one complete circle of stitches worked in the round.

Gauge

One granny square = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) after blocking, and the bodice works up at 12 dc x 5 rows = 2" x 2" (5 cm x 5 cm). Make one practice square and a small bodice swatch, block them, and measure before you begin — if your square is larger, go down a hook size; if smaller, go up.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make all 20 squares first and block them to exactly 4" x 4" so the skirt joins evenly and the circumference comes out at 40".
  • Keep your checkerboard consistent: lay the squares out in the 4x5 grid before joining so the alternating colors line up.
  • When joining the bodice to the skirt, place the join at the side seam and mark it with a stitch marker so your decreases stay centered.
  • Cotton yarn has little stretch, so try the bodice on as you go after Round 12 to check the fit before the decreases begin.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Granny Squares (make 20)

Make 10 squares with A as the center color and 10 squares with B as the center color. Each square is 4 rounds and measures 4" x 4" after blocking.

Rnd 1: With center color, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] x3, ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch 3 (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps).

Rnd 2: Sl st to next ch-2 sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, ch 1, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st (24 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps).

Rnd 3: Sl st to next ch-2 sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st (36 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 ch-1 sps).

Rnd 4: Sl st to next ch-2 sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice; repeat from * around, join with sl st. Fasten off (48 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 12 ch-1 sps).

Joining the Skirt

Arrange the 20 squares in a 4-row by 5-column grid, alternating A-center and B-center squares in a checkerboard. Join the squares with sc in A: hold two squares wrong sides together and work sc through both layers along the edge, then join rows the same way to form a tube. Join the first and last columns to close the tube (circumference 40"). Fasten off.

Bodice

With A, join yarn to the top edge of the skirt at the side seam and work in rounds.

Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the top edge of the skirt, join with sl st (80 sts).

Rnds 2–12: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, join with sl st (80 sts).

Rnd 13: Ch 3, [dc2tog, dc6] x10, join with sl st (70 sts).

Rnds 14–16: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st (70 sts).

Rnd 17: Ch 3, [dc2tog, dc5] x10, join with sl st (60 sts).

Rnds 18–20: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st (60 sts).

Rnd 21 (neckline): Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. Fasten off.

Sleeves (make 2)

With A, join yarn at an armhole and work in rounds.

Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the armhole, join with sl st (40 sts).

Rnds 2–6: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st (40 sts).

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. Fasten off.

Repeat for the second sleeve.

Edging

With B, join yarn at the neckline and sc evenly around the neckline edge, join with sl st. Fasten off. With B, join yarn at a sleeve edge and sc evenly around the sleeve opening, join with sl st. Fasten off. Repeat on the second sleeve.

Assembly and Finishing

All squares are joined as you go, so the main assembly is already done. Weave in all ends on the wrong side with your tapestry needle, working them through several stitches so they stay secure. Block the finished dress to the measurements given (36" from shoulder to hem, 40" skirt circumference) by gently steaming or misting with water and pinning flat to dry — this opens up the granny squares and evens out the bodice. Once dry, try the dress on and adjust the neckline or sleeve edging if needed.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the checkerboard for a gradient: arrange squares from light pink at the hem to cherry red at the waist for an ombre effect.
  • Add a few extra dc rounds to the bodice or sleeves for a longer, more covered fit — just remember each added round uses about 40 more yards of A.
  • Work the edging in a contrasting cream or white for a crisper, vintage-inspired finish.
