Pink Dot Ladder Knit Socks Free Pattern
Introduction
These beginner-friendly knit socks are made for small feet with big style. A single vertical ladder of eyelet holes runs down the front of each cherry red sock, inspired by mid-century geometric designs, and a cheerful pink afterthought heel adds a surprise pop of color at the back. Because they are knit as a simple straight tube, there is no heel flap, no gusset, and no complicated shaping to slow you down. They work up quickly in sport weight wool and feel soft, smooth, and cozy on little feet.
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Sport weight wool, approximately 150 yards total: 120 yards cherry red (MC), 30 yards pink (CC).
- Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles, set of 4, or size to obtain gauge.
- Notions: Stitch holder or waste yarn, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors.
- Finished size: Child small (fits foot length 6–7 inches, circumference 6 inches); instructions for child large (fits foot length 7.5–8.5 inches, circumference 7 inches) are in parentheses.

Gauge
24 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Knit a small swatch in the round (or back and forth and measure the knit side), then check that 24 stitches measure 4 inches before you begin.
Tips Before You Start
- Count your stitches after every decrease round on the toe; the paired decreases are easy to lose track of on small needles.
- Use a removable stitch marker to mark the start of the round and the center front, so the eyelet ladder stays in a straight vertical line.
- When you place the heel stitches on hold, use smooth waste yarn rather than a fuzzy holder so the stitches are easy to pick up later.
- Keep your yarn overs loose and even; a tight yarn over makes a tiny hole that disappears after blocking.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Cuff
Set-up: With MC, CO 36 (42) sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist.
Rnds 1–8: [k1, p1] around (36 (42) sts).
Leg
Rnds 1–16 (1–20): Knit all stitches (36 (42) sts). Work until the leg measures 2 (2.5) inches, ending after a complete round.
Eyelet Ladder
The ladder is a single vertical column of eyelet holes centered on the front of the leg. The front is the first 18 (21) sts of each round.
Set-up round: K8 (9), k2tog, yo, k8 (10) (36 (42) sts).
Eyelet round: K8 (9), k2tog, yo, k8 (10) (36 (42) sts).
Work the eyelet round every 4th round a total of 5 (6) times, working plain knit rounds in between. Then work even in stockinette until the leg measures 4 (4.5) inches from cast-on.
Heel Opening
Next: Knit 9 (10) sts, then slip these stitches to a holder for the heel opening. The remaining 27 (32) sts will be worked for the foot.
Foot
Continue in stockinette on the 27 (32) sts, maintaining the eyelet ladder on the front (now the first 18 (21) sts of the round) every 4th round as before, until the foot measures 4.5 (5.5) inches from the heel opening, or 1.5 (2) inches less than the desired total foot length.
Toe
R1: [k1, k2tog, k8 (10), k2tog, k1] twice (24 (28) sts).
R2: Knit (24 (28) sts).
R3: [k1, k2tog, k6 (8), k2tog, k1] twice (20 (24) sts).
R4: Knit (20 (24) sts).
R5: [k1, k2tog, k4 (6), k2tog, k1] twice (16 (20) sts).
R6: Knit (16 (20) sts).
R7: [k1, k2tog, k2 (4), k2tog, k1] twice (12 (16) sts).
R8: Knit (12 (16) sts).
R9: [k1, k2tog, k0 (2), k2tog, k1] twice (8 (12) sts).
Child large only — R10: Knit (12 sts).
Child large only — R11: [k2tog] around (6 sts).
For child small, 8 sts remain. Graft the toe closed using Kitchener stitch.
Heel
Place the 9 (10) held sts on a needle. Pick up and knit 9 (10) sts along the other side of the heel opening. Join CC.
R1 (WS): Slip 1, purl to end.
R2 (RS): Slip 1, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog.
R3: Slip 1, purl to last 2 sts, p2tog.
Repeat R2–R3 until 4 sts remain. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull tight. Sew the heel edges closed.
Assembly and Finishing
Weave in all ends on the wrong side, taking care not to pull the eyelets or the pink heel out of shape. Sew the small gaps at each side of the afterthought heel closed with the yarn tail. Block lightly to measurements: mist the socks, pat them flat, and let them dry completely before wearing. Repeat all instructions for the second sock.
Pro Tips and Variations
- Make the eyelet ladder pop by working the eyelet rounds in pink instead of cherry red for a bolder mid-century look.
- Add a second ladder on the back of the leg for a symmetrical design, spacing the eyelets evenly between the front and back.
- For a warmer sock, work the foot in a slightly denser gauge or add a few plain rounds before the toe for extra length.
