Palm Court Turtle Crochet Pattern

Meet the Palm Court Turtle, a palm-sized chenille companion with a softly domed shell and a flat, steady underside. It's designed for advanced beginners who are comfortable with single crochet, increases, and decreases, and it works up in an evening or two. The natural undyed chenille makes it feel like a tiny plush pebble in your hand, while geometric palm-leaf embroidery and a single gold accent give it a quiet art deco charm. Pop it on your desk, tuck it into a gift box, or let it be the small, soothing project you reach for between bigger makes.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Chenille plush yarn, super bulky (weight 6), 100% polyester, natural undyed — approx. 30 yds for the whole turtle.
  • Accent: A small amount of gold metallic embroidery thread (or fine gold yarn) for the center star.
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook.
  • Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, polyester fiberfill for light stuffing.
  • Finished size: Approx. 3.5 inches (9 cm) long, 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) wide, 1.5 inches (4 cm) tall.

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • inc — increase: work 2 single crochet stitches into the same stitch.
  • dec — decrease: work 2 stitches together into 1 single crochet.
  • MR — magic ring: an adjustable loop you crochet into to start a round with no hole.
  • sts — stitches.
  • Rnd / R — round / row.

Gauge

4 sc x 4 rows = 1 inch (2.5 cm) in single crochet. Work a small swatch and measure a 1-inch square; if your stitches are larger, go down a hook size, and if smaller, go up.

Tips Before You Start

  • Chenille yarn sheds and hides stitches, so use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round and count as you go.
  • Work tightly and evenly — loose chenille stitches let the stuffing show through the shell.
  • Stuff the shell only lightly; overstuffing stretches the dome and distorts the embroidery.
  • Embroider the shell before joining it to the underside so you can work flat and see the whole dome.

Tail (natural)

Set-up: Ch 4.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 2 (3 sts).
Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Embroidery (before joining)

With gold thread, embroider a small star or dot at the center of the shell. With natural yarn, embroider 6–8 straight lines radiating from the center to the shell edge in a geometric palm-leaf pattern. Weave in ends on the inside of the shell.

Joining Shell and Underside

Hold the shell and underside together with wrong sides facing. Join with sc through both layers around the edge, leaving a 1-inch opening. Stuff lightly, then continue sc to close. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew the four legs to the underside at the four corners using the yarn tails. Sew the head to one end of the underside and the tail to the opposite end, checking that all pieces sit level. Weave in all remaining ends on the inside of the body. Lightly shape the shell with your fingers and steam-block gently (do not press chenille with a hot iron) so the dome and flat base hold their shape.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the gold star for a tiny embroidered diamond or a few French knots for a different deco motif.
  • Work the shell in a soft sage or dusty pink chenille and keep the palm-leaf lines in a contrasting cream.
  • Add a small crocheted chain loop at the tail end to turn your turtle into a bag charm or ornament.
